FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A moment three years in the making came to fruition on Friday morning at the Fresno American Indian Health Project office parking lot.

The unveiling of this new bus, named "Spirit Runner" by Audrey Osborne, a tribal elder, who says this bus will change lives.

"It takes the spirit of us every day. It takes my prayers every day when staff members are driving and helping people, to protect them," said Audrey Osborne.

The bus will provide nutritious food, educational materials and books to Native families in the Central Valley.

Lucero Chavez with the non-profit, Save the Children, says their partnership has been a rewarding experience.

"We were ready to go. We had other initiatives going before this mobile unit, so it was a no-brainer to partner with FAIHP," said Lucero Chavez. "I think this mobile unit will bridge the gap for many communities here in the Central Valley. "

A gap, Stoney Dodson says, is very visible among the Native American community, especially amid rising expenses.

"If you go to the grocery store, prices are high and only getting higher. To be able to address this food insecurity, offering fresh produce for people to use, it's one less thing to worry about," said Stoney Dodson, FAIHP Events & Community Relations Coordinator.

During the event, several leaders shared a few words including the artist behind the creative vision wrapped around Spirit Runner.

A task she says was fulfilled wholeheartedly.

"Because I grew up with FIHP, everything on the bus is all the teachings I have learned growing up," said Jade Torres. "One side is up in the mountains and what they do like harvesting...and the city area, it's what we have now."

You can learn more about the bus routes and how you can support the organization by heading to the FAIHP Facebook page.
