FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A candidate facing scrutiny has clouded a tight primary race for a seat on the Fresno City Council.

California state Assemblymember Dr. Joaquin Arambula, one of several candidates vying to be among the top vote-getters in the race for Fresno City Council District 3. However, Arambula has faced new scrutiny following allegations outlined in public divorce court records, including claims of substance abuse and a stay in rehabilitation.

Arambula is running in hopes of replacing termed-out Councilmember Miguel Arias. District 3 represents parts of southwest and downtown Fresno, including Chinatown and the Tower District.

The tight race also features Fresno Unified Board Member Keshia Thomas, whose current term will end this year, and Tiffany Apodaca, founder of local non-profit Breaking the Chains and current Crisis Response Manager at the Marjaree Mason Center.

All look to take advantage of California's jungle primary election system, where the top two vote-getters advance to the general election in November.
