The latest development comes after weeks of debate surrounding competing transportation tax proposals at the city and county levels.
The dispute began last month when Fresno County supervisors ruled that the "Better Roads, Safe Streets" initiative needed additional review and likely would not meet the deadline required to qualify for the November ballot.
In response, the city moved forward with its own transportation tax measure. However, city leaders later withdrew that proposal after state lawmakers approved legislation Thursday allowing the county measure to proceed.
City officials told Action News on Friday that they learned the county's measure had not been officially filed by the deadline and still requires action by the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.
As a precaution, the city submitted its own transportation tax measure as a backup.
Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria, who co-authored the state bill, responded to the situation Friday night, saying, "Let me be clear... the Fresno County Transportation Improvement Act is now LAW."
