The City of Fresno, along with community organizations and churches, is organizing celebrations to bring residents together and honor the country's history.
"Patriotism is not something that is taught; it really is something that is caught. I think at times like this, especially when you look at milestones of 250 years, is that we really demonstrate, not only to ourselves, but also to our children and our children's children," said Pastor Jim Franklin of Cornerstone Church.
Franklin said his church is partnering with city officials to host its "Celebrate America" event this Sunday at the Fresno Fairgrounds. The gathering is intended to be a traditional patriotic celebration.
"It's just a good old-fashioned, flag-waving, God and country rally," Franklin said.
Admission and parking for the event will be free, and organizers plan to include a fireworks show.
City officials and community groups have already hosted several events to recognize the nation's history, with more activities scheduled throughout the weekend. In addition to the fairgrounds event, People's Church will host the Community Choir of the Valley's annual patriotic concert on Friday.
Tickets for the concert are free, though attendees must reserve them in advance.
Organizers say the events are meant to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose within the community as residents mark the historic milestone together.
"Community is what a country is. And if we ever lose that, we've gotten to a point where we just come home from work, we go into our houses, and we lose community; we're not together anymore," Franklin said.
