FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A longtime Fresno police officer and his K-9 partner are retiring together after years of service marked by many arrests, specialized detection work and statewide recognition.

Officer Jim Young and Zeus, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, marked their final "log off" as a team, bringing to a close a partnership that helped define the department's K-9 unit.

"I've been fortunate enough to be paired with three truly exceptional police dogs: K-9 Flurk, K-9 Gunner and K-9 Zeus," Young said.

Zeus gained attention throughout his career for assisting in apprehending suspects, detecting explosives and earning top honors in K-9 competitions across California, including 2024 Top Dog at the Las Vegas K-9 Trial.

His work made him a familiar name both within the department and in the community.

Young served 27 years with the Fresno Police Department and spent a significant portion of that time working in the K-9 unit.

Colleagues recognized his commitment to the program and his role in mentoring and training alongside his canine partners.

As Zeus transitions into retirement, he is expected to enjoy a slower pace of life filled with "long walks, 'pool zoomies,' and plenty of upside-down naps," according to the department.

Young also looks ahead to his next chapter, closing out decades of public service alongside his trusted partner.
