FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno Police officer could soon be facing charges of domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon.

30-year-old Efren Lopez was arrested after Fresno County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home on Tuesday.

Lopez was off-duty at the time and booked in jail with bail set at $100,000. He bonded out that same day.

The sheriff's office is handling the investigation.

The Fresno Police Department says Lopez has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation.

Fresno Police chief Mindy Casto released a statement Thursday afternoon saying in part:

Domestic violence is a serious problem in our community, and this is a disappointing reminder that law enforcement officers are not immune to the same problems many in our society face. When an officer is accused of committing a crime, they are subject to the same consequences as anyone else, in addition to losing their ability to work as a law-enforcement officer. Due to the fact our agency is conducting the personnel portion of this investigation, no additional information will be released at this time.

If you are the victim of domestic abuse, or you know someone who is, there is help available 24/7. In Fresno County, call the Marjaree Mason Center at (559) 233-4357. In all other locations, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233.
