It was also the first FBS game for head coach Matt Entz at the helm. He previously won 60 games, including two FCS national championships with North Dakota State, after working last season as the linebackers coach at USC.
The game was won in the trenches, with Kansas rushing for 207 yards compared to just 37 for the Bulldogs. Sophomore running back Bryson Donelson led the way for Fresno State with 34 yards on 11 carries.
The Jayhawks piled up nearly 400 yards of total offense compared to the Bulldogs' 216 yards of total offense.
EJ Warner, starting for his 3rd school after transferring from Rice and Temple, was 18/29 passing for 179 and 2 interceptions in his Bulldog debut. 11 different Bulldogs caught a pass, with Josiah Freeman leading the way with 43 yards on 3 catches.
Warner would also be stripped sacked by Kansas's Bangally Kamara in the third quarter.
Six-year quarterback Jalon Daniels was nearly perfect for the Jayhawks, going 18/20 passing for 176 yards and three touchdowns while scrambling for 47 yards.
Elijah Gilliam scored the only touchdown of the game for Fresno State, rushing in a 3-yard touchdown on the 'Dogs opening drive.
Jadon Pearson, a senior linebacker, led the way on defense with 12 total tackles after transferring in from Utah State.
Next up for Fresno State is its home opener against Georgia Southern. Kickoff from Valley Children's Stadium is set for Saturday, August 30 at 6:30 PM.
