FX has released the first look at "The Shards," a new series from executive producer Ryan Murphy.

The series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis (who also wrote "American Psycho" and "Less Than Zero") and takes place in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

According to the official description, it "follows a group of privileged high school students at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence."

Igby Rigney plays the central character, Bret, who's an aspiring writer.

Homer Gere (son of Richard Gere) plays a mysterious new student named Robert Mallory, who arrives just as a serial killer called The Trawler is targeting teenagers around LA.

Also in Bret's circle is Susan, played by Kaia Gerber, Debbie, played by Hayes Warner and Thom, played by Graham Campbell.

Evan Rachel Wood, Wes Bentley and Jordan Roth round out the cast.

The trailer shows the group entering their senior year of high school. At one point, we see Robert tell Bret, "You should actually make a little bit of an effort to become my friend," to which Bret replies, "Or else what, Robert?"

We also see hints that The Trawler could be closer than the crew might think.

Executive producing along with Murphy are Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Ellis, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey and Brian Young.

The show will also feature music from Troye Sivan and Leland. More on that collaboration HERE.

The first two episodes of "The Shards" premiere August 5 on FX and Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of FX, Hulu and this ABC station.
