SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- In front of a backdrop of young men and supporters in Sacramento County on Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom launched the California Men's Service Challenge in hopes of inspiring the next generation of service, leadership and community engagement among boys and young men.

The strategy behind the initiative is to work through partnerships already formed with local and state non-profits.

The California Men's Service Challenge was first conceived about a year ago when Gov. Newsom was given a national poll showing 70 percent of boys and young men believed that society does not care about their well-being.

The challenge is now calling on 10,000 men to lead as mentors, coaches, and tutors to this specific group.

The state is building upon existing partnerships with leaders already carrying out this type of work, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mentor California, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles.

"We have an epidemic of loneliness and so much of that is manifesting and metastasizing online in very profound and consequential ways and last week only underscored that further. And so this is a timely initiative," Gov. Newsom said.

The initiative's strategy aims at combining service with mentorship and skill development, engaging and meeting young men directly as these nonprofits and their teams build connections through education, community and career opportunities.

Tuesday's launch is a stepping stone to expanding the Governor's efforts to promote pathways for the success of California's youth.

Some of those career opportunities already being touted include disaster relief, wildfire mitigation and even coaching community sports.

The Governor's goal is to reduce the unemployment rate among the state's young men and create more opportunities for men in schools and places of leadership.
