Government shutdown forces changes to Central Valley Veteran's Day Parade

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As groundwork ramps up for the 106th Central Valley Veterans Day parade, organizers are preparing to pivot off of one of the parade's most memorable moments.

Parade coordinators now say the government shutdown has caused the 144th Fighter Wing to stay grounded and miss its previously scheduled flyover.

Other active duty military groups like the Air Force Band, Air Force ROTC and military recruiting groups will also be forced to stay home.

Plans are still in place to kick the parade off with eyes to the skies. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has committed to a ceremonial flyover, with other agencies also possibly joining the event.

Parade President and 30-year veteran Gabriel Villasenor has been working tirelessly to create the perfect show of appreciation, but he says none of it would be possible without help from the community.

"People, when they give, I can tell, honestly, it's for a reason. It's not for recognition. They do it to honor our veterans," Villasenor said.

Work is also underway at American Legion Post 509, where veterans and their families will be welcomed for a luncheon following the parade.

"It's fulfilling, it really is," said Army veteran and post adjutant, Vickie Pound.

For her, the year of planning is nothing compared to the feeling of giving back to her fellow veterans.

"It's that fun we're having with it. It's just that camaraderie of being with other veterans and everybody should experience that," Pound said.

No matter the changes to the parade, Villasenor is confident the Valley will show up for it's local heroes.

"If you wear a hat, and most of our veterans do, people will come up to you, shake your hand and say thank you for your service and they meant that. It means quite a bit just walking into a grocery store and somebody to say 'thumbs up.'"

The parade will begin Tuesday at 11:11 AM at Fresno City Hall and end at Chukchansi Park.

More than 114 entries are expected to take part in the three-hour celebration.
