HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) -- From boots on the ground to blades in the air, the City of Hanford is taking action to prevent the use of illegal fireworks.

Fire Chief Daniel Perkins says since the pandemic, there has been an uptick in access and use of them nationwide.

Prompting various state agencies to work together to research and provide funding for drone-enabled enforcement.

Chief Perkins expresses, "They are extremely dangerous, for all the fun you see it's not worth it, it's not worth it for us to risk someone else's livelihood, someone else's life on a short-term amount of fun."

In just a few weeks, drones will be up in the sky on the Fourth of July. Authorities are hoping the devices will serve as a deterrent to people from using illegal fireworks and help authorities catch those who choose to break the law.

The fines start at $1,000 per fireworks, and can go up to $10,000 in one day.

Chief Perkins mentions, "And in the City of Hanford, only utilize safe and sane fireworks between the 3rd of July and the 5th of July, and if you are using outside of that, it is considered an illegal firework, and subject to the same fines."

The city has three drones that will be actively monitoring areas the moment authorities see illegal activity.

The drones will fly at about 400 feet.

The picture quality is just as clear at night.

"So we are able to pick up those heat signatures and then it changes, then we can actually see people, we can see your face, see whatever else is happening, that way that part of privacy goes away once we know the illegal activity is happening," explains Chief Perkins.

Chief Perkins says if people are caught with more than 25 pounds of illegal fireworks, state fines can be upwards of $100,000.

People could also face up to six years in prison.

Locals are encouraged to take advantage of the free shows, including one in Hanford on Independence Day.
