Historic central Fresno neighborhood monument being restored

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A historic central Fresno monument will return after it was destroyed in a crash.

If you've ever been in the area of Palm and Simpson, near Fresno High, you may have spotted a 12-foot pillar.

Last December, the city said a DUI driver slammed into it.

Instead of scrapping the marker, Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced the city is rebuilding it by hand, using as much of the original material as possible.

"For generations, these 12-foot pillars have welcomed residents into the neighborhood and become an important part of this community's identity and character," he said.

The pillar welcomes people to the Boulevard Gardens neighborhood, which was created in 1919.

Two other markers will be repaired.

Work is expected to finish in two to three weeks.
