According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. near Avenue 216 and Road 232. The officers were pursuing a BMW SUV when their patrol vehicle collided with a Toyota Tundra that the officers said failed to stop at a stop sign.
Authorities say the driver of the Tundra, a man from Strathmore, is suspected of driving under the influence. Despite the police vehicle's sirens and lights, the driver did not stop and was struck by the pursuing officers. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn.
Tulare County firefighters had to remove the Tundra's driver from the wreckage. He was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The two officers sustained moderate injuries and were also hospitalized.
CHP Sergeant Erick Rivera expressed concern for those involved, saying, "They are brothers and sisters, and even though it's another department, when something like this happens, you always feel bad, so my thoughts and prayers are with them and for all involved."
The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash.
