The California Highway Patrol says Lazaro Hernandez has been booked into the Fresno County jail on two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence

The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. Friday on Auberry Road, just west of Summit Mountain Road.

Officers say Hernandez, who has a suspended driver's license, was driving a Dodge Durango east on Aubery when he crossed into the westbound lane.

Hernandez nearly collided with a car traveling west before colliding head-on with a Kia Soul.

The driver, 87-year-old Ted Amber of Clovis, and his wife, 86-year-old Sharon Amber, were killed as a result of the impact.

The Fresno County District Attorney's Office was called out to the scene to help CHP investigators, which eventually led to Hernandez being arrested and booked.

Investigators say that although marijuana and the odor of marijuana were detected inside the vehicle, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation was conducted and ruled out impairment.
