The fire broke out Tuesday night near Road 30 and Avenue 21 . Flames and smoke quickly spread, leaving significant damage to the property.
Sandra Nevarez and Isaac Salazar were home when the fire broke out. They are now leaning on each other to help get through this difficult time.
"It's probably the worst pain you could ever go through just to watch everything you ever worked for go up in flames," Nevarez said.
Their home held a lot of memories and meaning.
"My home is like my daughter's forever home because my youngest child passed away. That home was her forever home," she said.
Firefighters said they were able to contain the fire to the garage. Nevarez recalled the chaos of that night as they escaped the home with their dogs. But Salazar ran back inside to try to rescue her service animal.
"I think that's what made my boyfriend go in and try to get him cause he saw how much pain I was in," she said.
Just down the road, the couple's neighbors also jumped in to help.
"You just saw the flames just kept going and kept going," said neighbor Annaliza Vierra.
The fire left behind broken windows, burned walls and a hole in the roof. It also destroyed a truck belonging to the couple's friend, Scott Voss.
"He had this truck for 19 years. He just loved it and built it. He did everything by hand from scratch," said Courtney Hostetter, a friend of Nevarez, Salazar and Voss.
The chaos of the night took a toll on Isaac's health.
"He had a lot of stress on his heart. They had to bring him to the hospital. He got admitted. They said he had all this smoke and he had a partial lung collapse," Nevarez said.
She added that Salazar also suffered burns on the bottom of his feet.
Despite the loss, friends and community members have stepped in to help the couple rebuild.
"When you're down and out is when you find out who your real friends are, who's really there for you and who's going to support you and who sticks around when you have nothing," Hostetter said.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Nevarez, Salazar and Voss, with donations to be divided equally. Friends are also organizing a car audio show in Fresno on July 25 to help raise additional funds.
