Memorial Day crowds fill Millerton Lake with water safety top of mind

MILLERTON LAKE, Calif. (KFSN) -- This Memorial Day, families headed to Millerton Lake, where crowded conditions on the water came with reminders about safety.

"Water was great. (It) felt a little cold at first when we first got here, but as soon as you jumped in, you knew you made the right decision," Steven Mueller told Action News.

Mueller's son, Brody, spent part of his day off school on water skis.

"Pretty good. The water was a little choppy, though, but it was good," Brody Mueller said.

From water skis to jet skis, the lake was busy.

"There's literally no room to even dock your jet ski on the shore," Aarush Arya of Central Valley Jet Ski Rental told Action News on Sunday.

With so many people on the water, Arya said he stresses one key rule to renters.

"Speeding through those no-wake zones. It creates waves for those boats at the dock. It also creates a lot of wake for the people who are swimming at the shore, especially little kids, because they're not old enough to go on some of these watercraft," Arya said.

Millerton Lake has already seen one drowning this season.

Earlier this month, 25-year-old Everardo Apantipan died at the hospital after being pulled from the water.

Arya said he witnessed the incident.

"It's just tragic. I could be something that can be completely avoided. That's what life jackets are 100 percent made for. That's what throwables are made for," Arya said.

Weeks after the drowning, the Mueller family said they took precautions.

"We've just got to be aware of our surroundings. Make sure that we're prepared, the boat's in good working condition, (and) that we got the proper equipment, life jackets. Make sure we're taking care of ourselves, hydrated..." Steven Mueller said.

Mueller also shared a personal tip for busy holiday weekends: arrive early and leave before noon, when conditions can become crowded.
