MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Children across the North Valley will have the chance to experience college life this summer as Merced College marks the 50th year of its "College for Kids" program.

The annual program, which begins Monday, offers hands-on learning opportunities designed to introduce younger students to a college campus environment.

"It's a program designed for kids to get the college experience and have some hands-on learning in the summer," said Jenny Trost, Merced College Director of Contract Education and Community Services.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday, giving students flexibility to explore new interests or build on existing skills. Administrative Assistant Daniela Mendoza said the program aims to help students discover new interests.

"We want kids to be able to explore passions they didn't know they had before, and so a lot of our classes, they range from music, theater, one class named wearable fashion, a lot of art classes, science classes," Mendoza said.

To mark its 50th year, organizers have expanded the program's offerings, with 96 enrichment sections available. The enrichment courses are open to students entering grades two through eight, while aquatics programs and sports camps are available for varying age groups.

Community Education Coordinator Momi Mix said the program has generated excitement among families, especially for those who may not have previously had the opportunity to visit a college campus.

"A lot of my communication with the parents so far has been their excitement that their kid will be able to be on a college campus although they were not able to do so," Mix said. "So this is like a whole new door for their family."

Registration fees vary by course, and this year, 25 students received scholarships to attend up to three classes. Organizers said they hope to expand scholarship opportunities in the future.

Mendoza said the goal is for students to leave the program with lasting memories and a renewed interest in learning.

"What I hope for this summer is that all our students, all our kids have a great time," she said. "They learn something new that they never had before, and that they come back to Merced College when they're older, and they'll remember us."

Registration remains open, though officials say classes are filling quickly.
