Merced police ramping up gang violence prevention amid rise in incidents

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Merced Police Department is increasing enforcement efforts aimed at reducing gang violence and holding offenders accountable following a recent rise in shootings, officials said.

"Due to recent increase in shootings, our department is stepping up a targeted intelligence-driven enforcement on known offenders, known gang members, illegal firearms, probation and parole compliance," Seargeant Steven Odom of the Merced Police Department said.

The goal is to disrupt violent activity, prevent retaliation and increase the department's presence.

Despite five people being targeted in shootings this month, Odom said the overall number of shootings in Merced has decreased over the past several years.

"One shooting is too many and we take every incident serious. What we're seeing right now is a short term increase. Gang violence is often cyclical and retaliatory," he said.

Of the five people shot this month, three were killed. On Saturday night, police found 23-year-old Angel Barrios dead with multiple gunshot wounds on Austin near Olive Avenue. Police said the shooting was gang-related.

On Monday, two 14-year-old boys were shot at 13th and G streets. That shooting remains under investigation and is not considered gang-related, police said.

The mothers of the two teens declined to speak on camera but told Action News they are still in disbelief and heartbroken. They have visited the scene daily this week, where candles, balloons and a Bible have been placed by community members paying their respects.

One woman, who asked not to be identified, said her son was very close to the two teens, Nehemiah and Xavier, who were best friends. She said she hopes to see change in the community.

"Right away you cry, you hear about a 13,14,15 year old kid you right away think that could have been my kid out there," said the woman.

Odom said seeing families grieve is difficult but believes the department's enhanced efforts will make a difference over time.

"We want families and the community here in Merced to know that we are doing everything we can to prevent further violence," he said.

Police said the Gang Violence Suppression Unit will operate seven days a week until further notice.
