ATWATER, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Missouri Man has learned his fate after being convicted for the death of an employee at the federal prison in Atwater.

39-year-old Jermen Rudd III was sentenced to just over six years in prison for conspiracy to distribute narcotics and introducing a controlled substance into prison.

In August of 2024, The US Attorney's Office says Marc Fischer and a second officer became sick after coming in contact with a narcotics laced letter in the prison's mail room.

Fischer died at the hospital.

Prosecutors say the letter contained two varieties of a lab-created drug known as "Spice," which can come in liquid form.

Investigators said Rudd mailed the letter laced with drugs so inmate Jamar Jones could sell them in prison.

Indiana resident Stephanie Ferreira was also named a co-conspirator in the case.

Rudd pleaded guilty in January of this year.

Jones and Ferreira remain in custody for a trial set for this September.
