Academy Award nominated director Sara Dosa teamed up with renowned Icelandic poet and author Andri Snær Magnason for the documentary "Time and Water."

The documentary weaves together Snær Magnason's family memories and the story of his homeland's melting glaciers.

"He (Snær Magnason) has this kind of cosmic thing of making the most expansive and overwhelming issues of our time, like the climate crisis emotional and personal," Dosa said.

Snær Magnason gave Dosa his collected archives and that of his family.

"I actually handed her, not only my book, which is of course a big thing to do, but 70 years of family footage. Finally when it all comes together with color, with grading, with the music, I became quite emotional," he said.

Handing your life's story to a documentarian could be daunting. But Dosa is known for her work, including the Oscar-nominated "Fire of Love," centering on a human connection with nature.

"There's so many things about this project that totally ignited my imagination," said Dosa. "We're always looking for awe with glaciers as well as the kind of human stories that we showcase in the film. So I'll just say it's a dream come true."

"Time and Water" first captured audiences when National Geographic brought it to the Sundance Film Festival.

"We talk about telling gripping stories that inspire a deeper connection to our world," said Carolyn Bernstein, National Geographic's Executive Vice President of Global Scripted Content & Documentary Films. "I think 'Time and Water' is just the perfect example of that."

"Time and Water" will be released in New York theaters May 29. It'll be released June 5 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. And then it'll be on National Geographic and Disney+ later this year.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of National Geographic and this ABC station.
