The groundbreaking of a new apartment complex, the Ventura Family Apartments, adds to the long list of affordable housing provided in Fresno.
"We will be breaking ground on 25-hundred affordable housing units in the city of Fresno, and that is worthy of applause," said Mayor Jerry Dyer. " It's an opportunity for stability for families and an opportunity for people just to say we have a home."
This project, located on Ventura Avenue and 8th Street, will provide 54 affordable units for agricultural-based workers and their families.
Dyer shared why supporting families who help feed the world deserves a safe and affordable home.
"We cannot put food on the table across the United States, and we cannot put food on our own table without dedicated agricultural workers in the community and we are so fortunate to have them," said Dyer.
Councilmember Brandon Vang shared a few words and his personal experience as a young child whose family worked in the fields.
He hopes the children who live in the new unit and feel secure will also strive to reach big goals.
"During the school year, I would hit the books, but I was one of those kids who worked in the field, and here I am today standing in front of you," said Councilmember Brandon Vang.
The price tag of the project is about $40 million.
Dyer thanked everyone who helped bring the idea to life, especially in today's economy.
"The cost of materials continues to go up, the cost of labor continues to go up and all of these labors are big projects." said Dyer.
Half of the lot will be the Ventura Family Apartments.
As for the other half, it hasn't been decided, but Dyer says it could also be more affordable housing.
The project will be completed by the end of 2027.
