MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- For many years, the red neon Merced Mall sign sat outside the entrance of the JCPenney store, welcoming shoppers.
In its heyday, the sign lit up Olive Avenue. After decades, the sign came down on Thursday.
The Marketplace at Merced says the removal marks the starting point of exterior renovations for the mall.
Despite the construction work, all the stores and the food court are still open.
