Andrew Leon, 21, is accused of shooting and killing April Diaz, his then-girlfriend's mother, in November of 2023.
In front of a new jury, the prosecutor and defense attorney shared detailed opening statements, painting a picture about the case.
"You will learn in the course of this trial that Mr. Leon shot April Diaz 11 times," said prosecutor Kendall Reynolds.
The prosecutor told the jury that Leon was trying to talk with Diaz's daughter, Neveah, but wasn't let into the home before shots were fired.
"It's about what the forensic evidence shows and what the evidence that was located shows in this case, and it shows that Mr. Leon committed first-degree murder in this case," said Reynolds.
The defense attorney, saying Diaz was angry, pushing Leon into the street.
He says Leon acted in self-defense.
"She swings once, grabs his arm and swings again. Now, Andrew at this point looks down and he doesn't understand what just hit him. He looks down and instead of April's fist, he sees the cold steel of a knife. Shock, terror and anxiety flood his mind as he realizes what is happening," said Defense Attorney Brendan Bergh.
Neveah testified, recalling her relationship with Leon and the deadly night, before asking the judge for a break.
The two officers who responded to the gunfire also testified, describing the scene and their actions.
Day two of trial continues Thursday morning. More witnesses will testify, including Neveah, who will finish her testimony.
