Push to name new northwest Fresno park after politician Cruz Bustamante

A new park is in the works for northwest Fresno, and there's a push to name it after a California politician whose roots are deep in the Valley.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new park is in the works for northwest Fresno, and the council member who represents the district wants to name it after a California politician whose roots and legacy run deep in the Central Valley.

Cruz Bustamante was born in Dinuba and attended Fresno State.

He was elected to the State Assembly's 31st district in 1993, representing Fresno and parts of the San Joaquin Valley.

Four years later, he became the first Latino State Assembly speaker.

He was also elected lieutenant governor in 1998 under then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

While the park is still in the design phase, council member Mike Karbassi brought forward a resolution before the city council today to officially name the green space at Veterans Boulevard and Barstow "Cruz Bustamante Park."
