Rain and potential thunderstorms set to move in to the Valley

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The calm, but hazy conditions across Central California on Wednesday are set to change as a storm moves in the next couple days.

"The rain can be a good thing," ABC30 Meteorologist Christine Gregory stated. "This would definitely help to clear out some of the air quality that we've been seeing, whether that's from the smoke or from the harvest or dust that's been kicking up."

Some of those crops being harvested could be harmed by the wet weather.

"Rain this time of year, we can take a little bit, but so many of our crops are perishable. They're fresh crops, and so you take things like table grapes and get some water in the middle of those crowns there, it can be very problematic and breaking those crunch down and you lose a lot of your crop," CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau, Ryan Jacobsen, explained.

The system is also bringing possible thunderstorms across the region.

"Any thunderstorms can create a threat for lightning that can also create warm fires in the mountains and, of course, flooding in burn scars too," Gregory said.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for most of Central California for Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

PG&E is stationing crews in the foothills and mountains and preparing for potential power outages.

"When there's a period of time without rain, there tends to be kind of dust and things like that accumulates on transformers. When you get that first rain of the year, that can kind of interact sometimes. That's what we call flashover events, which are kind of small fires within the transformers that cause outages," PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith explained.

PG&E says it doesn't expect widespread transformer issues, but advises people be prepared for any possible outage.

Ahead of this storm, PG&E advises you to charge all of your devices, have a flashlight and backup batteries ready along with nonperishable food in case you experience an outage.
