The date a combination of "June" and "nineteenth" to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
In Fresno, people gathered to reflect on that history and the message for future generations.
"Today is a celebration of our heritage," said Artist and art therapist Melanie Glass, the CEO and Founder of B AWESUM, a Fresno-based creative start-up and art hub.
On Thursday, those in Fresno gathered ahead of the Juneteenth holiday, recognized annually on June 19.
"The Emancipation Proclamation happened, and then two years later, the Union soldiers made their route to Texas to inform those who were still in bondage that they were actually free, and so this date is used to commemorate that point in history," said Kwaeku Osono, an artist-musician who performed at the River Park event.
The community came together for the 4th annual Rhythm of Freedom, a local event and celebration organized by B AWESUM in partnership with River Park, the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce, and Art Hop.
The event featured spoken word, live painting from local artists, and Valley musicians.
"We have young people here so they get to see what we do, how we celebrate, how we conduct ourselves," said Glass.
Organizers said the holiday serves as a reminder that freedom is precious.
"Today is not just a one-day event; we're African American every single day," said Glass.
From art exhibits to educational sessions, attendees sat for a presentation centered on the rich history of African American hair.
"It tells you what tribe you came from; it helps us connect. A lot of our girls are wearing their hair braided -- they don't understand the technology, the adornment, and the history behind it -- it's regal," said Nia Hodge, the curator for "Hair as a Living Textile".
For some performers, the significance of Juneteenth is multi-layered.
"Being able to perform is something that's personally fulfilling but it's also a way to bring honor to my ancestors, even those I don't know the names of," said Osono.
Juneteenth celebrations will continue across the Valley over the weekend, including in Fresno during the annual Juneteenth Experience.
The event will feature three days of entertainment, culture, education, and family fun.
