Rose Parade could see rain for first time in 20 years

PASADENA, Calif. -- If you've got plans to go to the Rose Parade in Pasadena this year, bring your poncho because it could rain during the parade for the first time in 20 years.

Rain chances will develop starting New Year's Eve and are set to increase the next two days. The last time it rained during the parade was in 2006.

"That is definitely imprinted right on my head," recalled Stefan Pollack with Artistic Entertainment Services, which is building nearly half of the floats in this year's parade. "Anybody who was there remembers that moment because it was torrential that day, but the parade went on and it was a beautiful parade just like this one will be."

Organizers and volunteers are ready. Plus, last week's storm didn't impact the construction of the floats since that's all done indoors.

Mary McCormick and her husband Larry are among the hundreds of volunteers who are helping bring the floats to life.

"It seems like to me that there's still so much work to be done, but the hours that people put in, it'll be a long couple of days before everybody is all done and ready to pack it up," Mary said.

Artistic Entertainment Services has totally transformed the Rosemont Pavilion near the Rose Bowl into a float-decorating farm.

"It is an organized chaos to decorate all 16 of these floats, but it is organized," said Pollack, who said if it does rain, it will just add a little more weight to the floats.

"Hopefully, we're going to keep the rain away, but if it does come, these floats are built to withstand a little extra weight," he said. "So the flowers will absorb like they do in nature and will just take on 5% more weight."

Among the float entries is Travel South Dakota, which hopes to promote tourism in their state.

"There's nothing better than the Rose Parade, and just the spirit of the Rose Parade and the optimism and the happiness that this parade evokes," said James Hagen, South Dakota's Secretary of Tourism.

Fans, however, will likely show up to the parade - rain or shine.

"The flowers will take it," said Larry McCormick. "Everything is glued on good enough and all the roses are in are tubes. They're poked into the Styrofoam. It'll withstand the rain."

"We worked hard enough on it," Mary added. "If not, we'll be out there patching and doing what we can, but I think it'll withstand the rain."

As you prepare, the city of Pasadena is reminding people that umbrellas are not permitted along the parade route because they block the view for others.

You can watch the full Rose Parade on New Year's Day starting at 8 a.m. on ABC7.
