Sanchez Feed and Seed Inc. closing its doors after more than 50 years as owner plans to retire

HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) -- After more than half a century, the owners of the award-winning Sanchez Feed and Seed Incorporated in Kings County are taking a step back.

Local customers and the owner, Greg Sanchez, shared that they will definitely miss the feed store not only because of the products it offers, but also the community built within it.

Greg recalls, "We used to have an annual chick day. Every year in April, we gave away free chicks. My daughter, Megan, my niece, Tess, my son, Derek, and that is my wife, Charlie Chicken," as he looked through more than 50 years of memories.

Greg reflects on the decades he has spent running Hanford's largest locally owned feed store, Sanchez Feed and Seed Incorporated.

"It's been fun. I love the experience of meeting good people. I consider my customers good friends," expressed Greg.

He is gearing up to retire, which means the family business will now close its doors.

The decision was difficult due to the history within the four walls.

Greg's dad and uncle opened the shop in 1974, and then Greg took over as an adult.

Having recently lost his parents, Greg says it's time to take a break.

"We're not getting any younger, so I have to spend more time with them and create more memories with the family," explains Greg.

Customers say they will miss seeing the familiar faces and life-long friends made at the local shop.

The news of its closing is tough for regulars, but they understand.

"When my wife told me about it, it hurt me. But I also had a business. I owned a dairy for 60 years, and that one closed, but I never stopped working, so I think Greg and Barbara are going to be the same," says Gus Duarte, who has been a customer for more than 50 years.

Greg plans to stay busy in the community and appreciates all the customer support over the years.

"I want to thank them very much for all the business we had and for the friendships we made throughout the years," says Greg.

The family says they are very grateful for the last 50 years and invite people to swing by one last time.

The store's last day will be December 19.
