Second trial begins for accused murderer Andrew Leon

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A second trial begins in a Huron murder case after the first ended in a deadlocked jury.

Andrew Leon is accused of shooting and killing his then-girlfriend's mother but he says he acted out of fear for his life.

The case was expected to come to a conclusion in just days but instead, that's changed to months following the mistrial earlier this summer.

In November of 2023, Huron police found 37-year-old April Diaz with gunshot wounds on a Huron road. She died at the scene.

The then 19-year-old Leon later turned himself in to authorities in Monterey County.

Leon said he had gone to Diaz's home in Huron looking to speak with her daughter but Diaz refused to let him inside.

That's when prosecutors say Leon shot Diaz eleven times.

His defense claims he acted in self-defense.

Jury selection is taking place now after a mistrial was declared in July, with opening statements expected to begin soon.
