Section of burned giant Sequoia from SQF Complex Fire headed to Smithsonian Museum

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- People on the West and East coasts will be able to see a more than 1,500-year-old Giant Sequoia tree burned by a wildfire in the Sequoia National Forest.

The base of the massive tree is all that's left after the SQF Complex Fire tore through the Balch Park area nearly six years ago.

Forest service crews had to cut it down to prevent hazards to the public.

Now, the tree is on a journey to begin a new chapter.

The trunk was recently loaded up in Springville and taken to a wood supplier in Marin County.

Tree experts plan to cut it into two separate sections.

One piece will go to the new California Natural Resources building in Sacramento.

The other will go on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

The giant Sequoias are famously known as the longest-living organisms on Earth.
