Selma police urge caution after 15-year-old boy dies in e-bike crash

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Selma community is mourning the loss of a 15-year-old boy hit and killed while riding an electric bike.

"We met with the family yesterday and they are going to have to live with this tragedy for the rest of their lives, which is heartbreaking," said Selma Police Chief Rudy Alcaraz.

Highland Avenue on the West side of Selma is a busy one, connecting North Fresno to Hanford.

On Tuesday, just after 1:30 in the afternoon, a teenager was trying to cross the street at the intersection of Rose Avenue while riding an electric bike, but was struck and killed by a car.

A heartbreaking scene and now the site of a growing memorial.

"A young man who was doing what a young man and kids do, just out enjoying his day. It's an absolute tragedy. Our officers were taken aback by it because here is a young kid that sustained some major injuries," said Alcaraz.

The teen was taken to the hospital, where he later died. A GoFundMe says Manuel Uriel Hernandez Nolasco was a bright, loving boy and a twin who was on his way home from school at the time of the collision.

Selma police chief Rudy Alcaraz spoke with the teen's grieving parents on Wednesday.

He also says the driver stayed at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation.

"There is no malice in this event; it was just an absolute, unfortunate tragedy that the parents of this young man will have to live with, and the driver of the vehicle will have to live with," said Alcaraz.

Chief Alcaraz says he's noticed a rise in crashes involving electric bikes and scooters.

His message to teens and parents is to take extra safety precautions and follow all the rules of the road.

" It's not just happening in Selma or in Fresno County but throughout our state and throughout our nation, and we can put the message out about dangers, but when you are on them, you have to adhere to the roadway," said Alcaraz.

He says there are discussions about expanding and improving the intersection due to the community's rapid growth, adding that this would make it safer for anyone crossing.
