LOS ANGELES -- One of the most popular stories in the "Star Wars" anime anthology is expanding into a full series this summer.

Lucasfilm and animation studio Production I.G announced that "Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi," an eight-episode limited anime series, will premiere Aug. 5 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Supervising director Kenji Kamiyama, director Shunsuke Tada and producer Hitoshi Ito debuted the series' trailer and teaser poster at a panel during Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles. The project launches an all-new "Star Wars: Visions Presents" banner to tell longer-form stories from the franchise.

Picking up shortly after the events of the original animated shorts "The Ninth Jedi" and "The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope," the new series follows Lah Kara as she continues her Jedi training under Margrave Juro. Together with a small fellowship of rookie Jedi, Kara goes on a journey to save her father.

The trailer offers a sneak peek at the journey ahead, showing Lah Kara in a new light as she navigates a galaxy in the wake of the disappearance of the Jedi and the Sith. The footage teases a mission to stop an enemy from conquering the galaxy by "using the kyber crystals to make a weapon."

The limited series features much of the original creative team and voice cast alongside several new faces. Tada is directing a script by Mitsuyasu Sakai, with Kamiyama supervising the series, which will stream in both Japanese and English.

The returning English dub cast features Kimiko Glenn as Lah Kara, Andrew Kishino as Juro, Masi Oka as Ethan, Patrick Seitz as Homen, JP Karliak as Gramps, Simu Liu as Lah Zhima and Neil Kaplan as the Narrator. New additions to the English cast include Feodor Chin, Young Mazino, Chase Sui Wonders and Keone Young.

For the original Japanese-language audio, the returning cast includes Chinatsu Akasaki, Tetsuo Kanao, Hiromu Mineta, Hinata Tadokoro, Cho, Shinichiro Miki and Akio Otsuka as the Narrator.

"Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi" will stream Aug. 5 exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Lucasfilm, Disney+, Hulu and this ABC station.
