Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria and state Sen. Anna Caballero announced the legislation amid uncertainty over whether the measure could appear on the ballot.
The proposal could replace Fresno County's Measure C, a transportation funding measure. The legislation comes weeks after the Fresno County Board of Supervisors voted to pause consideration of the initiative pending the completion of an additional impact review.
According to the lawmakers, the timeline for that study could extend beyond the deadline required for placement on the November ballot if the measure is ultimately approved by supervisors.
Before reaching that stage, the initiative completed the ballot qualification process by gathering approximately 21,000 voter signatures in support.
Soria said she and Caballero have heard from mayors across Fresno County and believe residents should decide the future of Measure C.
