It all started at 7 pm Thursday at the Park View Village Apartments on Springville Avenue near Oak View Street when police were searching for 21-year-old Rosendo Gutierrez.
Porterville Police Chief Bobby Rader says Gutierrez was wanted for multiple crimes, including domestic violence and burglaries.
Authorities tried arresting him, but they say he ran into the attic of a duplex above four apartment units.
Police suspected that Gutierrez was coming down from drug use and were treating this as a rescue operation as well due to the heat in the attic.
He was eventually taken into custody after about 14 hours of negotiations and forced entry.
Gutierrez is the father of Amillio Gutierrez, who died in Bakersfield after being left in a hot car for hours in 2025. He was in jail at the time of his son's death. The mother, Maya Hernandez, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Each family in the four apartments was evacuated for their safety.
