Triple-digit heat prompts warning from CAL FIRE for elevated wildfire risk

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- CAL FIRE crews responded to several incidents in Fresno County on a day of triple-digit heat, including the Mount Fire south of Millerton Lake, as officials warned of an increased wildfire threat from hot, dry and windy conditions.

Earlier Saturday, crews were seen battling the Mount Fire about 10 miles south of Millerton Lake. CAL FIRE's aerial attack team assisted in fighting the blaze.

At last check, the fire had burned about 27 acres and was 100% contained. Officials said no structures appeared to be threatened.

CAL FIRE said the slow but steady rise in temperatures is also increasing the risk of wildfires. The agency has already responded to several incidents in Fresno County and is urging residents to remain vigilant as temperatures continue to climb and conditions worsen in the coming days.

"Wildfires can happen anytime, anywhere. So, it doesn't matter where you're at, something like that can happen. So it's just having that awareness of your surroundings and be able to respond. If you need to evacuate quickly, or if you're the one calling 911 and letting us know that there's an incident," CAL FIRE spokesperon Zach Irion said.

Officials said residents can help prevent fires from starting by preparing ahead of the hot months, especially in foothill and mountain communities. They recommended cutting vegetation down to ground level within at least 100 feet of homes and other buildings.

Even with those precautions, officials said it is important for residents to have an evacuation plan in place.

CAL FIRE is also reminding people spending time outdoors during the heat to follow life-saving safety practices as temperatures remain elevated.
