TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- More than 17,000 acres were given back to the Tule River Indian Tribe.
The historic milestone was announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.
In partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the tribe will reintroduce Tule Elk into the region.
These Elk have not been in the region for decades.
The governor's office says restoration will also improve groundwater recharge, reduce flood risks and secure water supplies to communities.
