However, researchers say the older we get, our quality of sleep starts to change.
"We wake up a little bit more often, we're a little bit more restless," says Dr. Lourdes DelRosso, a professor at UCSF Fresno and the Medical Director at the Inspire Health Sleep Center.
Research from UCSF Fresno found a 50-percent drop in sleep quality for women over 50 compared to men in that same age group.
Dr. Lourdes DelRosso is one of the authors of the study.
"I think this is an important finding because a lot of women are not aware of this," Dr. DelRosso said.
The study also found that sleep apnea also went up with age in both men and women.
Researchers looked at just over 1,400 people who were monitoring their sleeping quality at home.
"We looked at the parameters of sleep, like sleep apnea, sleep quality, total awakenings at night and sleep index," Dr. DelRosso said.
Dr. DelRosso says while menopause is likely related to the sharp drop, there could be other factors that can add to sleep disruption.
That's why it's important to keep an eye on your sleeping habits.
"If you have a feeling that your sleep quality is declining, don't just attribute to other things," Dr. DelRosso said. "Have a sleep study. Get an appointment with a physician."
Doctors say having a cool and comfortable room to sleep in, as well as not using your phone or reading in bed, are ways to improve your bedtime.
Dr. DelRosso also suggests keeping track of your sleeping patterns with a smart device.
These are just some tips to keep you from waking up at night.
