But the most common type of gynecological cancer is endometrial cancer, which affects the inner lining of the uterus.
"Its prevalence or the number of cases is increasing in the US," said Dr. Erin Blake, a gynecological oncologist at cCare in northeast Fresno.
Action News asked Dr. Blake what's driving the numbers up.
"So the reason we're seeing it rise is rising levels of obesity within the population in the country," said Dr. Blake.
The American Cancer Society reports, over 69,000 cases of endometrial cancer will be diagnosed in 2025. Dr. Blake says typically, women over 50 have been diagnosed with the disease.
She explains what signs and symptoms women should look out for.
"Abnormal bleeding and if after menopause, if you start having vaginal bleeding, that's the number one sign that there's something wrong," said Dr. Blake. "You should never have bleeding after you go through the menopausal transition."
Doctors are starting to see the cancer affects women in their early 20s and can affect a woman's fertility. However, if detected early, doctors say they can preserve the chances of pregnancy.
"So we do want to catch it as early as we can because that's when we can take care of it," said Dr. Blake.
Dr. Blake says the best way to prevent endometrial cancer is to live a healthy lifestyle, such as staying active and having a balanced diet.
