Officers responded to the area of Fruit and Dayton avenues following reports of a shooting.
However, when they arrived, officers were unable to locate the victim.
Authorities say a friend had already begun driving the woman to a hospital. At some point, they encountered Fresno Fire crews near Palm and Clinton avenues and stopped to seek help.
The woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where she later died.
Police have not released information about a possible suspect.
The investigation remains ongoing.
