Pope revives lapsed sex abuse commission amid skepticism

Saturday, February 17, 2018
Pope Francis has revived his lapsed sex abuse advisory commission by naming new members Saturday.

His decision comes after criticism over his support for a Chilean bishop accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring their abuse.

Pope Francis created the commission in 2013 to give him advice on the best ways to protect children. The pope named nine new members and he'll keep seven from the initial group.

The announcement comes the same day a Vatican investigator in New York will take testimony from one of the main whistleblowers in the Chilean cover-up scandal.
