Fresno police say jewelry theft at Fashion Fair mistaken for shooting, sending shoppers running in panic

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A theft inside a jewelry store at a Fresno mall sent shoppers into a panic on Tuesday when smashing glass was mistaken for gunshots.

Investigators say a thief kicked in a glass case around 6:30 pm and stole merchandise from Zee Jewelers at Fashion Fair Mall.

Fresno police officers are now searching for that suspect, who is described only as a man wearing dark clothing.

Officers have already found the stolen jewelry he's accused of taking outside in the parking lot of the mall.

Detectives are now combing through surveillance video to get a better description of the suspect.

No one was injured during the theft.
