SAN FRANCISCO -- In a small radio studio in San Francisco's Mission District, Amanda Guest leans into a microphone and announces, "You're listening to BFF.FM. Best Frequencies Forever. This is Cosmic Amanda."

Guest, also the executive director, started this community, non-profit, internet radio station in 2013.

"It's not influenced by algorithms and it's not programmed by a computer," Guest says.

Listeners can tune into a wide variety of programming that supports independent music, local artists, and underrepresented creatives.

"There is just such an amazing, diverse community of people, ideas, points of view that's represented on BFF.FM," Guest says.

"I love the fact that you can reach many different types of people," says Tony Burgess, aka DJ Mr. White. "When you tune in, you are going to find something that you like."

BFF.FM highlights not only the music, but also the DJs behind the microphone.

"Radio really offers this one-on-one connection between the DJ and the listener that you don't really see in any other kind of media, which I think is really special," Guest says.

"Radio gives you a sense of place and community that just listening to a playlist doesn't," DJ and musician Davia Schendel says.

According to Guest, the station, which is 100% volunteer, is dedicated to providing that human connection that listeners won't get through streaming services.

"A place that people can tune in because they want to feel a little more connected to San Francisco and our music scene and feel a little less alone," Guest says.
