On Thursday morning, 43-year-old Ka Lou Yang was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with an additional four years for a firearm enhancement.
Two weeks ago, Yang entered a guilty plea in a deal to avoid a trial.
"My hope is that he never gets out. My hope is that he dies in prison," said Judge Jon Kapetan.
Strong words were shared during this hearing for Yang more than two years after he murdered his wife, True Vang.
On March 23, 2021, Fresno police went to a home on Lamona Avenue and Fifth Street in Central Fresno.
There they found Vang shot and she died at home.
Detectives learned the couple had recently separated and were heard arguing right before she was killed.
"Your honor, what this case boils down to is that True Vang lost her life because Mr. Yang couldn't take 'no,'" said Senior Deputy District Attorney, David Olmos.
Police found 4 children in the home at the time of the murder.
Vang had 6 children, the youngest being 8 years old.
On behalf of Vang's nieces, a victim advocate read letters they wrote to the court.
"I never imagined losing her during her early 40s. I never imagined planning her funeral in my early 30s. Her children never imagined they would have to visit her at her final resting place at such a young age," read Viktoria Grigoryan, a victim advocate.
They wrote of their worry for Vang and her children before her murder.
"Just as my beloved aunt realized her worth and happiness and what she wanted and did not want in her partner, this monster sitting here in chains takes her life away," Grigoryan added.
Court records show a history of abuse between the couple.
In 2009, a case of domestic violence involving Yang and Vang was dismissed after both of them failed to appear in court.
Yang had domestic violence charges in another state prior to that.
"Out of Wisconsin, 2006, both in 2006, 4 total counts. Would that be the same victim do you know?" "I don't know," said Kapetan
In 2017, Yang was sentenced to 2 years in prison for felony fleeing a peace officer and driving recklessly.
He was let out early in 2019 on good behavior.
Yang will need to pay $7,500 dollars to the California Victim Compensation Board as well as fines.
