Donald has been officially retired since March 2024, but rumors continue to circulate that the former Rams star could return to pursue another championship.
Asked about Donald, McVay confirmed he has remained in contact with the former defensive tackle.
"I have had conversations with him. That's it. Here's what I'll tell you. We've kept in contact, his training is going really well... he's got places where he can train at," McVay said.
A potential return would add another high-profile name to a Rams defense that includes Myles Garrett, along with former Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, all players who were not on the Rams roster last season.
Safety Quentin Lake said the team's focus is on doing its job around Garrett.
"I think everybody knows what Myles is gonna do. So now it's just like, hey, can we do our job so this guy can cut it loose," Lake said.
The Rams have already generated significant attention entering the season, with discussions placing the team among Super Bowl contenders. The roster features quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Puka Nacua and former Fresno State standout Davante Adams on offense.
The team's offensive line was among the league's best last season, allowing 23 sacks, tied for the fewest in the NFL.
Offensive line coach Ryan Wendell, who also played at Fresno State, drew praise from McVay for his approach and working relationship with the Rams coach.
"Wendy has got such a great capacity for the game... one of my favorite things about he and I's relationship is there can be comfort in some conflict... we just want to get it right for the players," McVay said.
The Rams are scheduled to conclude training camp with a final walkthrough on Aug. 7. Their first preseason game is set for Aug. 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
