FRENSO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno County Judge has sentenced convicted murderer Andrew Leon to 50 years to life in prison for killing his former girlfriend's mother.

A jury found Leon guilty of first-degree murder last October after his first trial ended in a mistrial.

In November of 2023, Huron police found 37-year-old April Diaz with gunshot wounds on the road in front of her home. She died at the scene.

The then-19-year-old Leon later turned himself in to authorities in Monterey County.

Leon said he had gone to Diaz's home in Huron looking to speak with her daughter but Diaz refused to let him inside.

That's when he opened fire, hitting Diaz 11 times, until his gun jammed.

The judge said if he could give Leon more years, he would and that it was senseless to shoot 11 times, especially after Diaz had fallen to the ground.
