Doctors warn of health risks as the Valley braces for weekend heatwave

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Bracing for a heatwave has been top of mind for several people in the Central Valley, but if it hasn't, Dr. A.M. Aminian says it should.

"People have to be very careful," he says, " Anytime we have a heat, we have strong sun, and the smoke level goes up, so the air pollution goes up."

During extreme heat, Dr. A.M. Aminian says people often face dehydration, dizziness, respiratory-related issues, and at times, land in the hospital.

Concerns he says should be taken seriously and suggests drinking plenty of water and electrolytes.

" We need to replenish what we lose, if we don't many organs in the body are going to be affected, like our heart, lungs, and kidneys, liver and others," Dr. Aminian says.

He adds sometimes it's best to avoid being outdoors altogether or take trips to places like a cooling center or the mall for relief.

But some will turn to places like the lake, rivers, and splash pads, including this mom with her two boys at Fig Garden Loop Park.

"It's all shaded, which is great. Lots of green grass, we have a blanket, snacks, and it makes for a great afternoon," Yosemite resident Leigh Prezkop said.

Prezkop was in town for the day but lives in Yosemite.

She appreciates the cooler air in the mountains and hopes this heatwave is the last of the summer.

"It's already the end of August, so I am crossing my fingers this is it...hopefully we just have a mild summer," Prezkop says.

A recent study shows that extreme heat waves are becoming more frequent and that summer nighttime lows are warmer.

Dr. A.M. Aminian says he's aware of the shift and says it makes it that much more important to take care of yourself.
