Garnet Fire grows in size over the weekend, crews battle blaze threatening Sequoias

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A growing fire in Central California.

Action News captured video of smoke pushing into the sky on Monday as firefighters continue to try and gain containment of the Garnet Fire.

Lightning strikes started the fire more than two weeks ago, prompting thousands of firefighters from across the country to help battle the blaze.

Adrienne Freeman with the U.S. Forest Service says dead timber and vegetation has been fueling the flames.

"There's just more energy on the ground to burn. You see more smoke, you see more spread, it's very conducive to fire spread, and very resistant to control," she said.

In the span of just a couple of days, the fire grew by about 20,000 acres.

Officials want people to know all crews, on the state and federal level, are working from the same plan of action.

"It's very difficult to get to. There's not a lot of access, and there aren't a lot of what we call holding features or places that we can successfully make containment," Freeman said.

Another major concern is the Sequoias.

Video from the U.S. Forest Service shows the condition of the redwoods on Monday afternoon.

Freeman says crews have prepared for this. Smoke jumpers have been positioned to help put out ember fires in the tall trees.

"They do have tree climbing skills, and they are being deployed to climb those trees and actually put out those fires in the trees," Freeman said.

As the firefight continues, the U.S. Forest Service encourages anyone with questions or concerns about the Garnet Fire to reach out to officials.
