FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Over the last week, multiple wildfires have broken out throughout Central California.

Crews from across the country have joined the fights in counties such as Fresno, Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera.

A mixture of high winds, thunderstorms and lightning in the Valley has made the efforts to control the fires even more difficult.

Concern over Garnet Fire firefighting efforts

It's been more than two weeks since lightning struck in the Sierra Mountains and sparked the Garnet Fire in Central California.

Since then, there's been worry about the firefighting efforts.

The U.S. Forest Service hosted a virtual meeting on Facebook Tuesday to keep people informed on what's happening and to answer concerns from people living near the Sierra.

Meanwhile, a petition calling for the removal of the Sierra National Forest Supervisor is circulating online.

Action News reached out to the communications team but we have not heard back.

Camp Fresno evacuated as Garnet Fire burns three miles away

A century-old City of Fresno camp has been evacuated as the Garnet Fire continues burning.

It is now just three miles away from the camp, where personnel began evacuating last week at the height of the camp's season.

An official order to leave came on Sunday, just as the Garnet Fire exploded by 10,000 acres.

It now threatens surrounding areas such as Dinkey Creek and Shaver Lake.

Garnet Fire spreads to McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias

Fresno County's Garnet Fire has now reached the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias in the Sierra National Forest.

Fresno County's Garnet Fire has now reached the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias in the Sierra National Forest.

The U.S. Forest Service says the flames made a large run to the northwest as they pushed across Dinkey Creek and ran uphill toward Oak Flat, Ross Crossing and McKinley Grove Road.

Officials released video showing "low-intensity fire" with the iconic grove.

They say preparations had been made well in advance of this event, and firefighters had a installed sprinkler system that's been running 24 hours a day.

Crews also removed heavy brush build up from the base of the trees and out of the area.

The Forest Service says embers from the advancing fire front did get lodged in some of the branches of several trees, and crews remained in place to defend the grove until it was unsafe to do so.

Smokejumpers have now been called in and will attempt to climb the trees to extinguish the embers.

For now, there is no crown fire within the grove and no trees fully on fire.

The Garnet Fire has burned more than 54,900 acres since sparking on August 24. It is 14 percent contained.
