MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Golden Valley High School students took center stage this week during the school's fourth annual Cougar Closet Prom Fashion Show, an on-campus event designed to ensure every student can attend prom with confidence and style.

The fashion show highlighted the work of the Cougar Closet, a school resource that provides students in need with clothing, school supplies, self-care essentials, and even donated prom outfits.

Student models showcased a range of prom attire while fellow students served as announcers.

"I think everyone deserves to feel special when prom comes around. You just wanna have that moment to yourself," said Eliana Guaglianone, a model and student announcer.

Another student announcer, Moises Gonzalez-Urbano, said the Cougar Closet also works to address misconceptions about secondhand clothing, particularly during an expensive milestone like prom.

"The main thing that the Cougar Closet tries to do is fight the stigma against secondhand shopping," said Gonzalez-Urbano. "That is very important to keep in mind for people who can't afford stuff, especially during prom because prom can become really expensive."

Kelly Budisch, the school's student support manager, said the program continues to grow thanks to steady donations.

"We literally get new donations every single week, and at the end of my first year starting it, we started a fashion show too," Budisch said.

The event featured students confidently walking the catwalk, drawing applause from classmates.

The show included a variety of styles and performances, creating a festive atmosphere across campus.

Students in attendance praised what they saw.

"I love the fashion show. The were so many amazing dresses and suits. They look awesome for prom," said Alexander Gonzalez.

"They look so beautiful. The dresses were amazing. Students are amazing. Everything was great," said Evelyn Rivas.

After the fashion show, students were able to book private appointments to select their prom outfits free of charge.

Budisch said the team effort put into the event is all worth it once prom night arrives.

"My favorite part is when I get to see all those prom pictures posted at the end, and I can spot some of these dresses because I know them really well now," she said. "When I see them in the picture, it just melts my heart. It makes me so happy to know that a dress went to someone or that one tie went to someone- to go look at something they'll remember forever."

The Cougar Closet continues to accept donations. Those with tuxedos, dresses, shoes, or other formal outfits to donate can drop them off at the Golden Valley High School front office.
