"It's been totally fine so far," Dallas traveler Merill McHenry said. "I have to go to San Francisco, then I have to go to Dallas. Certainly, it's going to impact some travel and some connections over time, perhaps even more."
But behind the scenes, federal employees remain on the job without pay.
"We're already dealing with one of the most high-stress jobs out there. To add an avoidable stress on top of that, it's hard to deal with," said Air Traffic Controller Union president Jeffrey O'Gorman.
Roughly 50 people work in the Fresno tower, including air traffic controllers and equipment maintenance staff.
O'Gorman says during this time, routine preventative maintenance will come to a halt.
"When we get to this point, they're not allowed to do the preventative maintenance. They're just waiting to see if something fails so they can fix it," he said.
O'Gorman says this shutdown has been rolled out differently than in the past, with the FAA training academy continuing for at least 30 days in an effort to lessen the impact on the nationwide traffic controller staffing crisis.
"Safety is our job. Ot's our passion, it's what we do," he said. "That'll never be compromised."
Along with air traffic controllers, about 95% of all TSA employees will also stay on the job, also without pay.
During the shutdown in 2018 that lasted 35 days, TSA officers called out to work at an increased rate due to financial hardship, according to a TSA Spokesperson.
Now two days into this shutdown, officials say it's too early to know what impacts could be felt.
"A prolonged shutdown could actually have an impact on staffing levels, federal staffing levels at the airport," said Fresno-Yosemite International Airport spokesperson Vikkie Calderon. "We're monitoring the situation and working closely with our federal partners."
O'Gorman says that during the last government shutdown, many of his colleagues had to take on side jobs to make ends meet, but adds safety is their top priority and assures travelers have nothing to worry about.
